Our Musical Journeys

"I started music from a very young age; being birthed into a competitive and hypercritical world of classical musical. It begun with violin at seven years of age, and flute at nine, which I continued to play all throughout primary and high school. I was in every band, every ensemble I could possibly be in, even picking up instruments such as saxophone so I could be included in jazz band.

Despite all of this musical immersion I was shy. A VERY shy singer. I would never sing solo in front of anyone else. I was involved in choirs and vocal ensembles, but I did not dare venture off by myself. I have very vivid memories of my first vocal assessment in year eight at school. I was in a specialty music class, and this term everyone had to perform something sung. It came to D-Day, and I stood up there, blood rushing through my body, sweat beading from my forehead. My palms were dripping as I stood next to my classmates about to perform a small ensemble sung piece. As the introduction neared to an end, and sound was supposed to come out of my mouth, instead tears rolled out of my eyes and I uncontrollably wept. For the whole. Three. Minutes.

When I was seventeen years old I made the terrifying decision to enrol in a Bachelor of Music. Being at that point a completely untrained and inexperienced singer. I had no idea at the time that it would be one of the best decisions I have ever made! It was at university that I experienced my first ever singing lesson and was birthed into a world of contemporary music.

I now function as both a music teacher and singer/songwriter, aiming to release my first EP later this year."

“I was lucky enough to grow up in an extremely musical family. My mother was an instrumental and voice teacher and together with her partner, they opened a music studio called Stars & Idols in Toowoomba. This meant that every afternoon after school I would come and sing along in classes and participate in large group band sessions, picking up lots of contemporary techniques in a wide range of instruments. Towards the end of primary school is when I really found a passion for music and joined the choir, vocal ensemble, concert band, stage band and recorder concert. I felt like I finally had something that I excelled in and was so proud after so much hard work to receive music awards and the title of Music Captain.

However, it was during high school that I really found my confidence and the passion for learning new skills. I performed every year in the school musicals (achieving lead roles) and sang in the show band, which toured primary schools along the East Coast of Australia every October. It was the perfect introduction to my music journey which continued at USQ under voice specialist Dr. Melissa Forbes. I loved learning about what happens to our body when we sing and how to achieve the best results in a healthy way, although it was at this point that I had a reality check that you won't progress if you don't PRACTICE! So I spent hours trying to perfect my vocal technique and couldn't wait to share it, which is when I picked up my first two singing students and my life as a music teacher began!

A few years later after having graduated, I moved to London to gain more experience in the industry but now that I have gone out and seen the music world, I am excited to have settled into a few music schools to fulfill my passion of music teaching, helping my students grow as confident musicians and showing them how to really enjoy finding their own passion for music”.

I’d love to hear from you!
